Playing drums is a joyful thing...
Done it since I was a toddler.
As a teenager I joined my 1st band after being too shy to even play in front of my parents.
Played every club/pub in Liverpool until a band managed by the famous promoter Sid Bernstein, took me to New York.
Inspiration...
That was where all my drumming heroes were.
Throughout the 80’s I was back and forth, moving there for 5 years and doing my first serious session work and headline tours throughout the U.S.
On returning to the UK to start my family it was a new beginning.
Since then it’s been a balance of touring and recording, playing every type of venue from pubs to stadiums all over the world.
I’ve met wonderful people and played wonderful venues and seen wonderful things.
Lucky, lucky guy...
But it’s not all been rosy.
Drumming is joyful.
The music industry is not.
A freelance career has its drawbacks - massive insecurity, time away from loved ones and the music business has been decimated by technology, making it more difficult than ever for freelance musicians. Most of the big studios have gone, making touring the main option.
Now I’m ensconced in my own studio and am enjoying the musical creativity of doing more sessions again after almost constant touring these last 15 years. Balance...
